Free Flu Immunisation for Social Care Staff Confirmed by NHS England

05-Dec-2017

NHS England recently announced that social care workers are now eligible for free vaccination as part of the extension to the seasonal flu immunisation programme for this season.

This announcement was confirmed in a letter from NHS England openly addressed to Social Care Organisation Representative Bodies. The letter details that social care staff can have free flu immunisation; this is in particular to care staff and similar groups working in a registered service with service users in a clinical risk group or aged 65 years and over.

The letter goes on to detail where eligible staff should go and how to claim for the free immunisation jab.

The Flu Programme is the Government’s evidence-based plan to answer the timely demands of flu across England.

Every year the NHS prepares for the unpredictability of flu; and for most healthy people flu is an unpleasant but usually self-limiting disease, with recovery generally within a week.

There is, however, a given risk of severe illness from catching flu for:

  • Older people
  • The very young
  • Pregnant women
  • Those with underlying disease, particularly chronic respiratory or cardiac disease and
  • Those who have a low or reduced immune system

NHS England advise that the free immunisation to care staff is intended to complement, not replace, the existing immunisation schemes already in place across health and social care, and that some employers may already have a vaccination process in place for eligible staff.

The sentiment from NHS England is that they encourage all eligible staff to take up the offer to help protect themselves and their patients; and that employers can access a range of resources as part of the flu fighter campaign.

Further information can be found at the NHS England website.
