Unique Courses and other Community Engagements from University of Kent

09-Jun-2017

As part of its outreach activities, the University of Kent is offering free, individually designed short courses within the local community.

The intention of these free and unique sessions is based around the specific needs of the group who attend. Previous courses topics have included Child Development or the Raising of Children; Local History, Creative Writing; even Understanding Domestic Violence, and Understanding Crime.

The free courses can be put together for groups of service users or volunteers themselves; and this also depends on the needs or requirements of a given group.

The themes which these courses can cover are approached in an informal and friendly manner; this is so that the people who take part are gently introduced to academic theory; and this itself can be based within the teachings of Sociology, Psychology, Art, English, Creative Writing or History: The range of topics can be more, and again this depends on the interests or the needs of the group.

The focus of the University’s work is in areas in which the involvement in higher education is low, for the most part Medway and Thanet; where one of their drives is to engage actively with the community.

Another intention from the University is to inspire some of those who they engage with to enrol on one of their funded Access to HE programmes, which could offer them a route to degree-level education.

And those people who take part have the opportunity to go further to the University’s Access to HE Diploma; the equivalent of three A Levels (at that stage, examination registration and administration fee of £120 does apply, payable by the individual).

Anyone wanting to find out more should contact Heather Collingwood , Tutor for the Access Programme, on 01634 888885 , or by email at h.v.collingwood@kent.ac.uk .
