Kent & Medway will Move to Four Unitary Authorities by 2028
The Government has confirmed that Kent and Medway will transition to a four-unitary authority model as part of the Local Government Reorganisation programme, replacing the current two-tier system of local government.Under the new arrangements, Kent County Council, the county's district and borough councils, and Medway Council will be replaced by four new unitary authorities, each responsible for delivering all local government services within their area.
The changes will not take immediate effect. A two-year transition period is planned, with the new authorities formally established on 1 April 2028, known as "Vesting Day".
The announcement is expected to raise questions across Kent and Medway's voluntary, community, social enterprise and faith (VCSEF) sector regarding commissioning, funding, partnerships and future ways of working with local government. Medway Voluntary Action (MVA) has said it will continue to engage with members, partners and stakeholders to understand the implications and keep the sector informed as further details emerge.
Further discussion on Local Government Reorganisation is expected at the next VCSEF Leaders Network event on 15 September, where Medway Council Leader Cllr Vince Maple is expected to provide an update on the changes alongside discussions on neighbourhood health and other sector priorities.
MVA has encouraged organisations with questions or concerns about the reorganisation to get in touch for support and guidance during the transition process.
