Medway Council Community Call to Action for Luton Millennium Green

A Community Call to Action: Medway Council Seeks 'Friends' to Revitalise Luton Millennium Green

Luton Millennium Green is a local open space in Luton, Chatham and provides a vital greenspace for the large and diverse community who live around it.

The site connects with Coney Banks and is part of the Horsted Valley Network, which combine various opens spaces together throughout Chatham

A New Chapter for the Green

Medway Council is reaching out to local residents with a fantastic opportunity to make a tangible difference in their community. They are actively seeking passionate individuals to form a new 'Friends of' group, dedicated to the ongoing care and enhancement of the beloved Luton Millennium Green.

Like many public spaces, its ongoing upkeep requires dedicated attention and a collective effort. Medway Council is now keen to empower the local community to take greater ownership of this valuable asset.

The vision is clear: to establish a proactive 'Friends of Luton Millennium Green' group. This group would take the lead on regular tidy-ups, maintenance, and the general ongoing upkeep of the Green.

This could involve activities such as:

  • Litter picking: Keeping the space clean and welcoming.
  • Path maintenance: Ensuring safe and accessible routes.
  • Gardening and planting: Enhancing biodiversity and visual appeal.
  • Minor repairs: Addressing small issues to prevent larger problems.
  • Potentially organising community events: Bringing people together to enjoy the Green.

Support from Medway Council

Crucially, Medway Council isn't just asking for volunteers; they are offering support to get this new group off the ground and ensure its long-term success.

This support is multifaceted and designed to empower the community:

  • Group Setup Assistance: Guidance and resources for formally establishing the 'Friends of' group, including advice on governance and structure.
  • Access to Funding Opportunities: Help in identifying and applying for grants and funding streams specifically designed for community green spaces. The Council is committed to supporting the funding of the group's activities.
  • Initial Resources & Expertise: Potentially providing initial tools, materials, and expert advice to kickstart maintenance efforts.
  • Ongoing Partnership: Working collaboratively with the 'Friends' group to ensure the Green remains a vibrant community hub.

Who Are They Looking For?

Medway Council is calling on residents who have a love for nature, a passion for community, and a desire to contribute to the local environment. Whether you're a seasoned gardener, a keen litter picker, or simply someone who cares deeply about your local green spaces, your involvement would be invaluable.

This is an ideal opportunity for individuals, families, and even existing community groups to come together, connect with neighbours, and leave a lasting positive impact on Luton Millennium Green. By taking an active role, residents can ensure the Green continues to be a beautiful and thriving space for generations to come.
