UK Government Offering Free Courses on AI from February 2026

The UK Government has launched a major initiative offering FREE training on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to all adults, which is intended to upskill 10 million workers in the UK by 2030.

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday work across the UK, with its reach going far beyond technical teams and specialist job roles.

Everything from admin and customer service to leadership and strategy, the ability to use AI tools confidently is fast becoming an expectation in the workplace.

Many organisations want AI to work for Britain, yet skills gaps remain a barrier.

In response to this, the UK Government has expanded its free AI training offer through its joint government and industry programme, with a clear target to upskill.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) are offering these courses through the AI Skills Hub, and they cover practical workplace skills like drafting content, using chatbots, and automating tasks.

Tech giants including Amazon, Google and Microsoft have helped design the AI skills training courses, with 14 courses giving those who complete them a virtual badge.

The programme focuses on making best use of the reach and the high-quality training available through government and industry partners.

The goal is to equip the UK workforce with AI skills to support a range of outcomes, this includes:
  • To support workers to adapt and thrive in a workplace where AI tools are starting to be widespread
  • To target support towards worker and associated groups that require it the most, and
  • To help and support in the widespread uptake of AI across the economy, which then supports the country’s productivity and growth
As a result, it is expected that the FREE courses will allow people to then be able to use simple AI tools confidently, understand AI core skills for work, be able to apply AI responsibly in everyday tasks, and so build their confidence in new professional practices.

The offer is made up from 14 recommended courses designed to build strong base knowledge; and whilst the courses are designed for people working in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) they are just as valuable for professionals in the Public, Private AND Charity Sector.

It is said that this scheme will get rid of a major barrier to AI up skilling, so employers can now support staff development without cost, as well as bringing their teams up to a level equal to the rest of the digital world.
